Hi! I am making mini turkey meatloaves that call for oats (a healthier sub for bread crumbs). What can I use in place of 1/2 cup of Quaker Quick-Oats? Thank you!

put batter in pan and then add half of cored pears into batter, push down slightly and then put the sugar on top ...let the pears show...
also sometimes decorate top with Swedish coarse, big crystals of brownish sugar. purchase in store in sugar section. expensive but great for special luncheon or tea. Ruthie

Jeanne, it's lovely of you to want to adapt your baking to accommodate your niece and her family. In 12 Tribes' kitchen, we use Smart Balance and Earth Balance margarines which are transfat-free. These brands have several products that have similar packaging, so read the labels carefully to make sure htat you're buying the parve (non-dairy) ones. Before you even go shopping, I recommend talking with your niece about how strictly her family follows the Jewish dietary laws. There's a wide range of variation among individuals and households - from generally avoiding ingredients that are made from non-kosher animals, like lard, to eating only foods prepared with certified kosher ingredients in a fully kosher kitchen. She'll know how much you care about her just by your having asked.

You have probably answered my question, but I will send this anyway. First, I am not of the Jewish faith, but my niece has converted and married into a Kosher family. I would like to make some baked goods for her for one of which is a recipe by Sheila Lukins - Rustic Apple Spice Cake. It calls for unsalted pareve margerine. Cannot find Rich's. Is there a substitute? Thanks

I substitute coconut oil for butter except when the butter flavour is needed (and I never use margarine or shortening). Coconut oil is solid at cool room temperatures, as it is saturated. But wait! It is a saturated medium-chain triglyceride, not long-chain triglyceride like lard and butter. Coconut oil actually has health benefits for the heart and brain.

I use oil instead of marg. all the time for this recipe and have used agave for the sugar. Does have that "agave" taste but if needed for health reasons, it does work.

I make these all the time and was set to make this at midnight til I realized I couldn't find my cookbook - you posting it has been a godsent! Thank you!
